The International Centre of Children’s Scientific Creativity, which is being implemented by the National center «Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine» under the auspices of UNESCO, is located on a 2.7-hectare plot in Puscha-Vodytsia (Kyiv). The space planning was based on the heliocentric solar system concept, where each building symbolically fulfills the role of one of the planets of the system. The central building will be a planetarium which, according to the idea, embodies the center of the solar system.
We were faced with an important task: to reconstruct the existing capital buildings, built in the 60s of the last century, and to design new ones, according to the concept of the innovative educational and recreational center. The work on the project involved specialists from NASA, the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN, and Argonne National Laboratory (a research center of the U.S. Department of Energy). After the completion of new facilities and reconstruction of existing ones, the complex will have the 12 most modern laboratories, where famous scientists will work. In addition, the center will have a hotel, a hostel, a canteen, and a sports and recreation center.
The existing four-story building will be reconstructed with an increase in building area for a dormitory and academic building. Other existing buildings will be reconstructed as a laboratory and educational building and canteen by dismantling some blocks and completing the premises. There are also plans to repurpose the auxiliary buildings as a cinema and lecture hall.
Among the new buildings of the complex are a dormitory and an administrative and medical building. A hotel for scientists, not intended for commercial use, will be functioning on the territory of the center. The cultural center will be the exposition center – a museum to house the exhibits of the Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine collection. On the roof according to the design solutions will be equipped with a green amphitheater for the summer cinema.
The safety and reliability of the designed objects are always a priority issue, especially when we are talking about a place where there will be a large number of children. There will be central video surveillance, a security system, and fire safety on the territory of the complex. The center will be fully inclusive. The smooth movement of small groups of people on the territory of the projectors provided lowering of the sidewalks to the level of the roadway.
Given the fact that the construction is taking place in a park area, it was important for us to carry out the design solutions with the maximum possible preservation of existing trees and shrubs.
The construction of the objects has already begun, our specialists provide designer supervision. The works will be performed in one stage in thirteen start-up complexes.
